The U.S. dollar fell to its lowest level since August and Treasury yields sank after Fed Chair Jerome Powell said on Wednesday that it was time to slow rate hikes. The U.S. dollar weakened against its major rivals in the European session on Thursday, following Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell's comments indicating a slower pace of rate hikes from this month.
The chair said that the central bank may decelerate the size of rate hikes when it meets later this month. It would be appropriate to moderate the pace of rate increases as the central bank had approached the level of restraint to bring inflation down, Powell said in a speech at the Brookings Institution in Washington.
Currently, Markets expect a 50 basis point rate hike at the meeting to be held on December 13-14. The benchmark yield on the 10-year treasury note fell to 3.605 percent. Yields move inversely to bond prices.
