Retail foreign exchange and CFD broker volumes slipped to $30.4 trillion in the second quarter of 2026, marking a 9.3% drop from the previous quarter. The decline reveals a structural shift in retail trading behavior, as top brokers report that nearly all of their activity now comes from non-currency instruments. For Indian retail traders, the data highlights a changing market structure where traditional currency pairs are increasingly overshadowed by broader macro assets.

Q2 Trading Volumes Cool

Retail platforms processed $30.4 trillion in FX and broader CFD trading volume during the second quarter of 2026, according to recent FM Intelligence data. This marks a 9.3% pullback from the first-quarter peak of $33.5 trillion. Despite the quarter-on-quarter dip, the total remained just 1.4% below the volumes recorded during the same period a year earlier. Out of the 21 brokers tracked in the ranking, 18 reported lower volume than in the first quarter, though all top 10 firms maintained higher totals than their previous-year baselines.

Non-FX Instruments Dominate Flow

The latest data exposes a stark divide between headline numbers and actual currency trading, with non-FX assets driving bulk volume for market leaders. The broker that claimed the number one spot for the quarter generated 97% of its volume outside of traditional foreign exchange, focusing instead on equities, indices, commodities, and other CFDs. Two of its closest competitors reported that 99% of their trading flow came from non-FX instruments. This heavy reliance on broader macro assets reshuffled the market leaderboard, pushing last year's top broker down to third place.

The second-quarter broker metrics indicate that while global retail CFD activity remains robust, traditional foreign exchange is capturing a steadily shrinking share of the total volume. As top trading platforms increasingly rely on commodities and indices to drive order flow, the retail market is moving definitively toward a multi-asset environment.
