Gold ETFs for Non-Gold Traders | The Smartest Hedge Against Ringgit Volatility Now

Abstract:You don't have to be a gold trader to benefit from gold. If you're looking to invest in gold as a safe-haven asset, this article is for you!

In an era defined by currency turbulence, persistent inflation, and the unpredictable ripple effects of global trade tensions, a growing number of Malaysian investors are turning to gold exchange-traded funds as a disciplined, cost-efficient strategy for preserving wealth without the logistical burden of holding physical bullion.

Gold ETFs have emerged as a premier choice for investors seeking long-term stability, offering a highly efficient gateway into the precious metals market while bypassing the traditional hurdles of buying, transporting, and storing physical gold.

The case for gold exposure in a Malaysian portfolio has rarely been more compelling. Amidst fluctuating domestic inflation rates and unpredictable currency shifts, allocating capital into gold ETFs effectively helps preserve purchasing power and shields investment portfolios from local market uncertainties. With the Ringgit having faced sustained pressure over recent years, the argument for a non-correlated, globally recognised store of value carries considerable weight.

For investors exploring this space, the range of available instruments spans two distinct categories: physically-backed funds that track gold bullion prices directly, and equity-linked funds that provide exposure through shares in gold mining companies. Each carries its own risk and return profile.

The SPDR Gold ETF, one of the world's largest and most established physically-backed gold funds, is designed so that each share reflects one-tenth of the price of an ounce of gold. Its structure provides a straightforward way for investors to access gold, avoiding the logistical challenges of purchasing and storing physical bars. The fund carries an expense ratio of 0.40% per annum and maintains substantial trading liquidity on NYSE.

For those prioritising cost efficiency in a long-term buy-and-hold strategy, the iShares Gold Trust stands out for its lower expense ratio of 0.25%, with physical gold custodied by JPMorgan Chase Bank across vaults in London, New York, and Toronto. The lower annual fee compounds meaningfully over an extended holding period, making it a preferred instrument among investors who treat gold as a structural rather than tactical allocation.

The Abrdn Gold ETF Trust and Graniteshares Gold Trust both offer an even more competitive expense ratio of 0.17%, the lowest in the physically-backed category, with gold stored in vaults across Zurich and London. The geographic diversification of storage locations is a feature that resonates with investors who attach value to jurisdictional security.

For investors seeking leveraged exposure to gold price movements through the equity of producers, the VanEck Gold Miners Equity ETF tracks a global portfolio of companies primarily engaged in gold mining, with an asset base exceeding USD 27 billion and daily trading volume of approximately 26 million shares. The fund's performance is influenced not only by gold prices but also by the operational efficiency and profitability of the underlying mining companies, making it a higher-risk, higher-potential-reward instrument relative to physically-backed alternatives.

An important consideration for Malaysian Muslim investors is Shariah compliance. The use of advanced ETF screeners with dedicated Shariah-compliant filtering allows Islamic investors to pinpoint gold investments that strictly align with religious principles. The Securities Commission Malaysia has issued guidelines on Shariah-compliant investment products, and investors are advised to cross-reference fund classifications against those standards before committing capital.

Unlike physical gold, which incurs insurance premiums and secure vaulting fees, gold ETFs eliminate these operational overheads while offering the flexibility to execute buy and sell orders instantly during standard market hours. For Malaysian retail investors, access to internationally listed gold ETFs is available through licensed digital brokerage platforms regulated by Bursa Malaysia.

The relevance for local markets is hard to overstate. With global gold prices having sustained elevated levels in 2025 and into 2026, driven by central bank accumulation and persistent geopolitical uncertainty, Malaysian investors are increasingly treating gold ETFs not as a speculative instrument but as a foundational component of a resilient portfolio. Bank Negara Malaysia's monetary policy trajectory and the Ringgit's sensitivity to US Federal Reserve decisions further reinforce the strategic logic of maintaining gold exposure as a currency hedge. For investors who have yet to consider this asset class, the structural case is already well-established. The more pressing question is not whether gold belongs in a diversified Malaysian portfolio, but in what form and through what instrument.
