USD Stablecoins Dominate as Euro Alternatives Surge

WikiFX
| 2026-07-29 11:00

Abstract:The US dollar continues to dominate the $316 billion global stablecoin market, representing 97% of total supply as of June 2026. However, strict EU MiCA regulations have triggered a massive surge in euro-backed stablecoin volumes after non-compliant dollar tokens were delisted for European users. Meanwhile, regional fiat tokens pegged to the Singapore dollar and Brazilian real are capturing localized remittance volume, even as Japanese yen-pegged tokens struggle for market share.

Dollar-pegged assets continue to account for the overwhelming majority of the $316 billion global stablecoin market, underscoring the US dollar's persistent grip on digital trade settlement. However, changing regulatory standards in Europe have sparked a rapid expansion in euro-backed stablecoin volumes over the last year. For macro and cross-border traders, these shifts highlight how regional compliance frameworks are actively reshaping digital fiat liquidity and remittance channels.

US Dollar Maintains 97% Market Grip

As of June 2026, US dollar-backed stablecoins still represent 97% of the expanding digital currency sector. Tether (USDT) maintains a market capitalization of roughly $184 billion, followed by USD Coin (USDC) at approximately $72.5 billion. Many leading dollar-backed stablecoin issuers hold short-term U.S. Treasury bills and Treasury-backed money market funds as part of their reserve assets, while the separate market for tokenized U.S. Treasuries has also grown rapidly.

This heavy concentration reflects the dollar‘s traditional role as the world’s primary reserve and trade settlement currency. While non-dollar stablecoins grew by 90% year-over-year to $1.2 billion through February 2026, their overall market share actually slipped to just 0.24%. The deep liquidity of dollar-backed assets creates a self-reinforcing cycle for market makers, leaving fewer active trading pairs for alternative fiat currencies.

MiCA Regulation Fuels Euro Stablecoin Volume

The European Unions Markets in Crypto-Assets (MiCA) regulation has fundamentally altered the region's digital settlement landscape. The rules require relevant stablecoin issuers to hold 60% of their reserves in European credit institutions. Given these requirements, Tether withdrew its euro token (EURT), and major crypto exchanges including Binance and Coinbase Europe delisted USDT for EU customers.

This regulatory vacuum immediately accelerated the adoption of compliant euro alternatives. Circles EURC token saw its volume grow by 1,139%, with total monthly euro stablecoin volume surging tenfold from $383 million to $3.83 billion following the implementation of MiCA. A consortium of 37 banks across 15 European countries is now preparing to launch a joint euro stablecoin to capture this emerging institutional demand.

Mixed Traction for Regional Fiat Currencies

Outside of Europe, non-dollar digital currencies are experiencing mixed results depending on local utility. In Japan, yen-pegged stablecoins hold less than 0.01% of the dollar-pegged market capitalization, seeing limited organic adoption despite a dedicated regulatory framework established in 2023.

Conversely, regional stablecoins are gaining momentum where they resolve specific cross-border payment frictions. Singapore's XSGD established itself as the leading non-US token in Southeast Asia, handling more than $18 billion in combined on-chain volume through 2025. In South America, Brazils real-pegged BRLA saw transfer volumes multiply eightfold, handling approximately $400 million monthly for remittance use cases. Decentralized exchanges on the Polygon network currently capture 61% of the monthly volume for these non-dollar assets across emerging markets.

The current market structure indicates that while regional regulatory frameworks are successfully forcing the localized adoption of euro and other fiat-pegged settlement tokens, the US dollar remains the undisputed anchor for global liquidity. Until institutional trading pairs broaden significantly, non-dollar assets remain primarily constrained to regional payment and remittance channels rather than broad macro trading blocks.
