Gold is back in the spotlight as traders closely monitor the next move for the precious metal amid shifting expectations around US monetary policy.
During Thursdays Asian session, gold briefly tested the $4,300 level for the first time in seven weeks, before trading near $4,274.80. The latest move reflects renewed support for non-yielding assets as markets reassess inflation risks, US economic data, and the potential path of Federal Reserve policy.
Recent developments have added momentum to golds advance. Lower oil prices have helped ease near-term inflation concerns, while expectations of a September Federal Reserve rate increase have moderated. Market pricing for a potential rate hike has declined from around 60% to approximately 55%, putting pressure on the US Dollar and providing additional support for gold prices.
Meanwhile, recent US economic indicators have shown some signs of slowing momentum. Private-sector employment growth came in below expectations, with ADP reporting a 44,000 increase in July compared with the 70,000 forecast. The ISM Services PMI also slightly missed expectations, coming in at 54.1 versus the expected 54.5.
With markets searching for clearer signals, attention now turns to the upcoming US Nonfarm Payrolls report, which could provide further insight into labor market conditions and influence expectations for future Fed decisions.
From a technical perspective, gold continues to maintain a constructive structure, trading above key moving averages. Momentum indicators remain positive, although the market is approaching levels where traders may begin watching for potential signs of consolidation.
Key levels traders are watching include:
📈 Upside resistance: $4,350, followed by the 100-day average near $4,394 and the 200-day average near $4,493
📉 Downside support: $4,275, followed by $4,157 and $4,078
Institutional positioning has also attracted attention, with reports suggesting that macro funds have significantly increased their gold exposure since June, while systematic participation has continued to grow. However, positioning data reflects current market sentiment—not a guarantee of future price direction.
As gold returns toward the $4,300 area, traders will continue watching key drivers including:
• US employment data
• Federal Reserve policy expectations
• US Dollar movements
• Oil price trends
The next move for XAU/USD may depend on how these factors develop in the weeks ahead.
What will shape golds next breakout—or potential pullback?
