Weak US Jobs Data Reshapes the Fed Narrative; Risk Assets Rally, Dollar Sags

The July Nonfarm Payrolls report landed as one of the most consequential data releases of the summer. Instead of the modest job gains the market was braced for, the US economy actually shed jobs last month — a stark signal that the labour market is cooling faster than the Federal Reserve's most recent communications had implied. The reaction was swift and broad-based: equities rallied on the prospect of a more patient Fed, gold surged to a seven-week high, the dollar sagged, and rate-hike odds for September were sharply repriced lower.

According to the CME FedWatch Tool, the probability of a September rate hike collapsed from roughly two-thirds a week earlier to just under half. That single shift became the pivot around which every major asset class traded through the back half of the week. Attention now turns to the upcoming CPI and PPI inflation reports, which will either validate the market's dovish repricing or reintroduce the case for continued Fed vigilance.

Equities: A Risk-On Week Across the Board

All three major US indices posted solid weekly gains, with tech leadership underscoring the market's conviction that easier financial conditions are now more likely. The S&P 500 broke through a fresh milestone, the Nasdaq led on the strength of AI and growth names, and the Dow followed higher. The rally reflected not just relief on the rates picture, but a broader willingness to add risk into a data-heavy stretch ahead.

The technical picture is more nuanced. After such a sharp move, some short-term exhaustion is natural, and the tape will be sensitive to any hawkish surprise in the inflation prints later this week.

Gold: Best Week Since January

Gold was the standout performer, delivering its strongest weekly gain since mid-January and touching a seven-week high. The catalyst was straightforward: a weaker dollar, softer yields, and diminished conviction in near-term Fed tightening are a textbook backdrop for the metal. UBS added fuel to the story, forecasting that gold could reach $5,000 per ounce in the first half of 2027 — a call that will draw attention regardless of whether it proves prescient.

Beyond the immediate data catalyst, gold continues to benefit from a deeper structural bid: persistent geopolitical risk, ongoing central bank accumulation, and a global backdrop in which portfolio hedges remain in demand.

Oil: Middle East Risk Reasserts Itself

WTI advanced as geopolitics reasserted its grip on the crude complex. Tehran warned that negotiations over Persian Gulf shipping routes would not lead to an immediate reopening of the strategic waterway, and also rejected direct talks with the United States. Demands to end the naval blockade and sanctions remain unresolved. Supply anxieties deepened further after Houthi militants claimed responsibility for an attack on a Saudi refinery and a tanker linked to Abu Dhabi's national oil company.

Oil, in other words, continues to trade on a different set of drivers from the rest of the risk complex — and remains highly sensitive to the next diplomatic or security headline.

Dollar & FX: Broad Softness, With Caveats

The dollar weakened sharply on the jobs data but recovered part of its losses as Middle East risks intensified — a reminder that safe-haven flows can offset dovish repricing when geopolitical anxiety is elevated. The euro was a clear beneficiary of the dollar's slide, though incoming German data offered only modest additional support.

The yen was a special case. Japan's Ministry of Finance confirmed that the United States and Japan had jointly intervened in FX markets to address excessive currency volatility, and Finance Minister Satsuki Katayama said further coordinated action remains on the table if needed. The message is unambiguous: policymakers are prepared to defend against disorderly moves, and that puts a policy floor beneath the yen even when domestic drivers are quiet.

Week Ahead

CPI and PPI will dominate the calendar. A soft print reinforces the market's dovish repricing and extends the current tape; a hot print reopens the case for a September hike and could trigger a sharp reversal across gold, equities, and the dollar. Positioning around the release matters more than usual given how aggressively the market has moved on the jobs data alone.

The Takeaway

One weak jobs report has reshaped the entire near-term Fed narrative — but that narrative only holds if this week's inflation data cooperates. Traders should treat the current risk-on tape as conditional rather than settled, and size accordingly.
