US inflation data is out—and July showed another gradual step toward cooling price pressures.
Consumer prices increased 3.4% year-over-year, slightly lower than Junes 3.5% reading. Core inflation also eased, coming in at 2.5% compared with 2.6% previously, suggesting that underlying price pressures continue to moderate.
On a monthly basis, headline CPI rose just 0.1%, while core CPI increased 0.2%, keeping the overall inflation trend on a gradual downward path.
One of the key questions heading into the report was whether energy costs could push inflation higher again. Todays data provided a clear signal—energy prices actually declined 1.5% in July, while shelter remained the main contributor to the monthly increase.
With the figures broadly matching market expectations, attention is now shifting back to the Federal Reserves next policy decision. While inflation is showing signs of cooling, the path forward remains uncertain, and the September rate decision is still open to debate.
For traders, the next market moves may depend on how investors interpret the latest inflation trend:
📌 Will a slower inflation path put pressure on the US Dollar?
📌 Could gold gain further support as rate expectations adjust?
📌 How will the Fed balance inflation progress with economic growth concerns?
The market focus is shifting from the inflation data itself to what it means for future monetary policy.
