Cowen Inc is an American multinational independent investment banking and financial services firm founded in 1918 and headquartered in New York with offices worldwide. 1998, Cowen was acquired by Societe Generale and renamed SG Cowen. In 2000, Cowen sold its private client services division to Lehman Brothers, retaining its investment banking, research, sales, and trading businesses. Cowen was a division of Société Générale until 2006 when it was spun off in an initial public offering and renamed Cowen and Company, a joint venture between Cowen, Credit Suisse, and Merrill Lynch.
