Market Overview
Spot gold was shaky and weaker during the Asian session on Friday (April 21) and is currently trading at $1995.64 per ounce. Gave back most of the overnight gains as more Fed officials reiterated their views on further rate hikes ahead of a quiet period, causing market expectations of a Fed rate cut within the year to fade, providing support to the dollar. This caused the positive impact of the less-than-expected initial claims data to fade, and gold prices are expected to remain at risk of shaking down in the short term.
U.S. crude oil traded near $77.10 per barrel; oil prices fell more than 2% on Thursday to their lowest level since late March on concerns that a possible recession could weaken fuel demand and higher U.S. gasoline inventories.
Friday will usher the April PMI data from Europe and the United States, the market is generally expected to perform better than in March, but most are expected to remain below the 50 mark of the glory line, which may raise safe-haven buying demand for the dollar and bias gold prices in a negative direction.
