"High Inspirations" Mastermind Disappears as $25 Billion Investment Scheme Collapses

More than 300 investors flew to Malaysia with one goal: find the people they say vanished with nearly 100 billion ringgit.

For years, High Inspirations looked like a success story. Investors received regular payouts, withdrawals were processed without delay, and promised returns of up to five per cent every fortnight convinced thousands that the platform was legitimate. Then the payments stopped. The website disappeared. Billions were gone.

High Inspirations first appeared in 2018 and rapidly attracted investors from mainland China, Taiwan, South Korea, Thailand and Vietnam. At its peak, the online investment scheme allegedly siphoned almost 100 billion ringgit, or roughly 25 billion U.S. dollars, making it one of the largest alleged investment frauds linked to Malaysia.

The collapse unfolded slowly before accelerating without warning. Withdrawal requests began failing in September 2021, raising the first signs that something was wrong. By August 2022, the platform had shut down completely, leaving investors unable to recover their money. Many had reinvested their earlier profits or increased their investments after years of apparently reliable returns. Those gains proved to exist only on paper.

Among the first victims to seek legal action were seven individuals who filed police reports at the Cheras District Police Headquarters in Kuala Lumpur, alleging combined losses exceeding 31 million ringgit. Representing them was lawyer Andy Yeoh, who said more than 300 additional victims, most of them salaried workers and small business owners, were preparing their own legal claims.

According to Yeoh, High Inspirations was widely promoted on online platforms beginning in 2018. Investors were told the business model could consistently generate returns of five per cent each month, an assurance allegedly made by the scheme's suspected mastermind, a Malaysian believed to be based in Penang. The steady stream of early payouts persuaded many participants to commit even larger sums, believing the operation had proven itself over time.

When lawyers served a legal notice on the man identified as the alleged architect of the scheme, he denied any knowledge of High Inspirations or involvement in its operations. Separately, investigators identified him as a person of interest in an unrelated money laundering investigation.

Bank Negara Malaysia has since placed High Inspirations on its Financial Consumer Alert List, which identifies entities that are not authorised to provide financial services or that may be operating in breach of financial laws.

The case has become one of the starkest reminders of how convincing modern investment fraud can appear. Years of successful withdrawals created trust that conventional scams rarely achieve. By the time the platform collapsed, many victims had already committed their savings, borrowed additional funds, or persuaded family and friends to invest alongside them.

For regulators, the scale of the alleged losses exposes the challenges of policing cross border digital investment schemes that operate across multiple jurisdictions before suddenly disappearing. The Securities Commission continues to urge investors to verify every investment platform through official regulatory registers and warns that any scheme promising consistent returns of five per cent a month or more should be treated as an immediate red flag.
