The rupee, which began with gains, had to settle with a fall of 18 paise against the USD at 87.25 (provisional) on August 21, 2025. The loss of steam had to do with a strong American currency and a recovery in crude oil prices. The rise in risk appetite across global markets amid easing trade tariff tensions and renewed hopes of a peace deal between Russia and Ukraine made the rupee begin on a positive note, according to forex traders. The strengthening American currency in the overseas market and increasing crude oil prices made investors restrict the upward movement in the rupee. Even though the rupee hit an early high of 86.93 today, it ended the day with a low of 87.25 against the greenback.

After falling for two consecutive days, gold finally bounced back with sharp price rises across India’s spot markets on August 21, 2025. The rise was evident across 24K and 22K segments. In the 24K segment, the gold price for one gram rose to INR 10,075 from INR 10,015. In turn, the 10-gram price lifted by INR 600 to INR 1,00,750 from INR 1,00,150. The 22K segment also saw price rises across weights. The per-gram gold price surged by INR 50 to INR 9,230. On the other hand, the 10-gram price moved up to INR 92,300 from INR 91,800.

Retail investors have trusted central government dated securities, renowned as G-secs, way more in August 2025. Their G-sec trades in the secondary market on the RBI Retail Direct platform saw a rise of 5.39 times in value compared to the same period a year ago. According to the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) data, the trading activity of retail investors in G-secs was INR 4,267.55 crore as on August 11, 2025. This was a sharp rise from INR 668.36 crore as on August 12, 2024.
