Republican and Democratic Party SymbolsThe elephant represents the Republican Party, while the donkey represents the Democratic Party. Political cartoonist Thomas Nast created these characters in 1874 for Harper‘s Weekly. Nast used the elephant to symbolize the strength and power of the Republican Party, often depicted in red. This imagery quickly became the party’s symbol.
In contrast, Nast depicted a Democrat mocking a deceased Republican member by showing a donkey (an animal perceived as stubborn and foolish) kicking a lion (the deceased Republican). The Democratic Party embraced this symbol, emphasizing the positive aspects of steadfastness and resilience through the donkey.
Why Are U.S. Presidential Elections Held on a Tuesday in November? In 1845, federal law established “the Tuesday following the first Monday in November” as the election date for U.S. presidential elections.
In the early days, election day varied by state. However, with improved communication and faster information dissemination, concerns arose that states voting earlier might influence voters in states voting later. To prevent this, Congress set a single national election day in 1845.
Why Tuesday? At that time, voting locations were primarily in major cities, and travel was time-consuming, usually done by horse-drawn carriage. The roads were in poor condition, and Tuesday allowed rural voters to travel after the Sabbath, stay overnight, and reach polling places the next day. Also, many voters were Christian farmers who were busy with church on Sundays and farming during the warmer months, making November a more convenient time to vote.
Why November? Most Americans were farmers, and by November, the harvest season had ended, making travel easier without severe cold.
Today, though roads are well-developed and few Americans are farmers, national elections continue to be held on a Tuesday in November. Although some propose moving election day to Saturday, U.S. elections are still traditionally held on the designated November Tuesday.
Has a President Ever Been Elected Without Winning the Majority of the Popular Vote?Yes, this has happened five times. Due to the Electoral College system in the U.S., the popular vote does not always determine the president.
The Electoral College, designed by the Founding Fathers, distributes power between states and the federal government. Although the popular vote is influential, it does not have a legally binding effect on the presidential outcome, which sometimes results in an Electoral College outcome differing from the national popular vote.
Why Is Voter Turnout Low in the U.S.?Several factors affect voter turnout. In the 2020 election, interest surged, reaching a historic high of 66.7% voter turnout (compared to 58.6% in 2012 and 60.1% in 2016), largely due to expanded mail-in and early voting options.
Critics argue that current voter registration laws impact turnout. Other influences include voter demographics, long-term political or economic stability, the predictability of election outcomes, and a lack of appeal in some candidates. Turnout is generally higher in general elections than in primaries and higher in presidential election years than in midterms.
The Woman on the Dollar Coin and Her Connection to the U.S. Presidential ElectionSusan B. Anthony was a pivotal leader in the U.S. women's suffrage movement. She first advocated for women's rights at the 1848 Seneca Falls Convention and later traveled nationwide to speak on behalf of womens right to vote.
On November 5, 1872, Anthony cast her only vote in a presidential election at a polling station in Rochester, New York. Since womens voting was illegal then, the New York State Supreme Court convicted her of illegal voting two months later, fining her $100.
This event became a historic turning point in the suffrage movement, and in 1979, her portrait was placed on the dollar coin—the first woman to receive this honor. Susan B. Anthony died on March 13, 1906, in Rochester, New York, at age 86. Fourteen years after her death, the 19th Amendment, which granted women the right to vote, was passed in 1920. This amendment is often called the “Susan B. Anthony Amendment.”
U.S. Constitution 19th AmendmentSection 1: The right of U.S. citizens to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or any state on account of sex.Section 2: Congress shall have the power to enforce this article by appropriate legislation.
On August 18, 2020, President Donald Trump pardoned Susan B. Anthony's conviction for illegal voting, honoring her significant contributions to expanding voting rights in the United States.
