Venezuela Shock Triggers Safe-Haven Flows as the Dow Breaks 49,000 for the First Time

Market Overview

Global markets experienced heightened volatility yesterday following a sudden escalation in Venezuelas political turmoil. Reports that President Nicolás Maduro had been detained sharply lifted geopolitical risk, driving capital into traditional safe havens including U.S. Treasuries, precious metals, and the Japanese yen.

Despite the initial risk-off impulse, markets stopped short of panic. Investor confidence in U.S. equities remained intact, with all three major indexes closing higher. The Dow Jones Industrial Average briefly surged past the 49,000 mark for the first time in history. Although gains moderated later in the session, the index still closed at a record high. Small-cap stocks outperformed, leading the broader market advance.

On the equity front, Amazon and Tesla led gains among mega-cap technology stocks. Chevron surged more than 5% after former President Trump hinted that U.S. energy majors could move to invest in Venezuela, fueling optimism across the energy sector.

In macro and FX markets, a combination of safe-haven demand and weaker-than-expected ISM manufacturing data pushed U.S. Treasury yields broadly lower. The 10-year yield fell by 4.3 basis points. The U.S. dollar index drifted lower, giving back earlier safe-haven gains. The Japanese yen strengthened notably, briefly approaching the 156 level.

Commodities and Crypto in Focus

Metals Surge Across the Board

Precious and industrial metals staged a powerful rally. Spot gold jumped more than 2.5% on intensified safe-haven buying. Silver extended its “short squeeze” dynamics, rising 5% in spot markets, while New York silver futures briefly spiked nearly 10% intraday. Copper shattered expectations, with LME prices climbing above the $13,000 per ton level for the first time on record.

Energy Markets See a V-Shaped Reversal

Crude oil initially sold off amid geopolitical uncertainty but rebounded sharply as the session progressed. WTI crude surged more than 3.6% from intraday lows, reflecting renewed supply risk concerns.

Crypto Resumes Its Uptrend

Risk appetite remained resilient in digital assets. Bitcoin rallied strongly, reclaiming levels near $95,000. Ethereum also advanced, breaking back above $3,200 for the first time in a month.

Key Themes AheadU.S. December ISM Manufacturing PMI Hits Deepest Contraction of 2024, Dragged by Inventories

The U.S. December ISM Manufacturing Index edged down from 48.2 to 47.9, marking its tenth consecutive month below the 50 expansion threshold. New orders contracted for a fourth straight month, while export orders remained weak. Employment declined for the eleventh consecutive month, although the pace of contraction slowed.

The prices paid index held steady at 58.5, roughly six points higher than late-2024 levels. The headline weakness was largely driven by a faster drawdown in inventories. Analysts note that customer inventories are also low, suggesting factory demand could improve over the coming months.

Goldman Sachs Turns Bullish: Overweight Chinese Equities

The annual reweighting of the Bloomberg Commodity Index is expected to trigger the sale of more than $6 billion in gold futures and over $5 billion in silver futures during a five-day roll window. Institutional strategists warn that over the next two weeks, the Comex silver market could see position liquidations equivalent to roughly 13% of total open interest, potentially forcing a sharp downward repricing.

Thin post-holiday liquidity conditions could further amplify price volatility.
